Poultry Farming: Dos, Don'ts, Myths, and Truths

Commercial poultry is one of the fastest-growing agricultural enterprises in East Africa due to its short production cycles, quick cashflow, and high demand for eggs (especially by the Rolex industry - chapati-based eggroll) and meat. However, many farmers fail, make losses or are facing challenges because they rely on assumptions, shortcuts, or misinformation. Pitekowa Ventures has organized a session to address some of the challenges and expose the participants to underlying science and best practices, dos and don'ts when it comes to poultry farming. This session aims to demystify commercial poultry farming by explaining what works, what doesn’t, what is true, and what is merely hearsay — all grounded in science and management best practice. We will also attempt to put the egg or chicken first question to bed! If you are an aspiring, struggling or defeated poultry farmer, this session might be of very good value to you.

Improving Programming Quality through Robust Data Management

In the work done in today’s development and humanitarian contexts, data (of high quality) has become a critical asset for accountability, learning, and decision-making. Yet, many actors especially those implementing projects and programmes continue to face challenges related to data management. Weak data management practices have often resulted in unreliable data used for reporting, measurement of progress, decision making and advocacy. But, not all is lost. Over the years, best practices and improved models have emerged to address the challenges encountered in data management by business and program teams. Pitekowa Ventures has organized a two-part session aimed at capacitating data management practitioners to up their game. The training session will be free and by the end, the participants will be able to apply data management best practices — from collection to analysis and utilization — ensuring that the data they generate is reliable, useful, and actionable for decision-making, reporting, and advocacy.
